Mook ji bar has been on my list of places to go for so long. Numerous ventures have failed because they always have a long wait list (1hr?!!) especially on a Friday night and no bookings. But finally, 6:30pm on a Tuesday night + no wait time, we struck gold! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>TTeobokki</b> (rice cake with fishcake and one boiled egg ~$15) is one of my favourite korean dishes. The sauce was nice though, not too sweet but enough spice at the same time. However it was lacking the instant noodles and does get slightly boring with only two ingredients. In hindsight we should've added the option of dumplings for an extra five dollars. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Beef bulgolgi soup</b> ~$15. A warming soup on a cold day. The soup base was quite tasty and slightly rich. Although the beef was slightly tough and overcooked (which I wasn't too fussed about because I normally don't eat beef), I liked that they weren't stingy on the quantity of ingredients. There was a decent serving of beef, zucchini, mushrooms and enoki mushrooms. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Jap chae with beef </b>$15. My friends love this dish and always order it whenever we eat korean food. It consists of potato starch noodles which have a springy but chewy texture with beef, sliced carrots and onion. It was a very generous serving, even between four people we still couldn't finish half of it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjStCWt-KCF1hTsGAo4H6leWoC0LG8_QB-cMYHB7DhUo0E3lQeH2OAh-vqi20-llBaaLpPVH3XV-1XgDdrKV91HN3SrXalzyFCAFd3ZGmhq55LId1CWQRUOvxOYu9JEnb2dOmxPB7xslmBN/s1600/20140722_190103_Richtone(HDR).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjStCWt-KCF1hTsGAo4H6leWoC0LG8_QB-cMYHB7DhUo0E3lQeH2OAh-vqi20-llBaaLpPVH3XV-1XgDdrKV91HN3SrXalzyFCAFd3ZGmhq55LId1CWQRUOvxOYu9JEnb2dOmxPB7xslmBN/s1600/20140722_190103_Richtone(HDR).jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<b>Spicy fried chicken half serving </b>~$15. Sweet and spicy korean fried chicken was so good here! They only used chicken wings and drumsticks which makes it so much easier to eat. The sauce was quite spicy but addictive at the same time. Also the chicken wasn't dry at all! Secretly, I was glad that my friends thought it was too spicy meaning more for me. I thought that it one of the better KFCs that I have tried in Melbourne and would re-order next time. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think Mook ji bar has become one of my go-to places for decent korean comfort food in the city. Can't wait to return and try out their stews and KFC again. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Gin and dill cured ocean trout with creamy goats cheese and dill scrambled eggs, beetroot relish on sourdough bread </b>(originally on rye bread) $ 20. This was the most generous serving of scrambled eggs and salmon that I have seen so far, it was definitely enough to feed two people. My dad didn't warm to this dish because the trout was quite thickly cut and the large quantity did get a bit excessive after a few bites. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Chilled yoghurt pudding, spiced poached pear, burnt butter crumble, orange and saffron syrup $16. </b> On the other hand, it has been a while since a sweet breakfast item has "amazed" me, but this one really did. The pudding is very light and has a slightly acidic taste which pairs nicely with the syrup. I don't even like orange in the first place, but i can make an exception for this dish because it tasted great. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Spanish baked eggs (vegetarian option) $15. </b>Being a cold winter day, nothing beats hearty baked eggs. This entire dish however was not executed well. There was no tomato taste, the eggs were over cooked and the beans had no flavour. </div>

<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For breakfast, Urban Provedore was a slight hit and miss. The yoghurt pudding is a stand out dish, whilst the others were slightly underwhelming.</div>

<b>Chirashi don</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>A must order!!! </b>The chirashi don had a range of different fish (can't remember all of them unfortunately) which had been slightly aburi'ed. It had salmon, tuna, prawn, scallop and two types of fish, as well as egg and salmon roe. All so fresh. I normally don't eat rice, but this time I made an exception because it was so gooood. The rice was well mixed with seaweed and other ingredients, it almost felt like they were literally embedded into it. </div>

<b>Uni don</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Definitely for those with an acquired taste. Similarly with the chirashi don, it was sitting on a bed of mixed seaweed rice. It was my second time trying uni and I'm growing slowly to like the smooth creamy texture. The BF pretty much demolished this bowl. </div>

<b>Soft shell crab sushi. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This isn't all the sushi pieces! I actually forgot to take a photo and pieced it back together (I'm sure i'm not the only one who does that either haha). The serving of crab was quite generous and doesn't leave an oily taste in the mouth either . Also, we actually misheard the waiter when we were choosing the soft shell crab sushi, and instead of the sushi we received the actual soft shell crab (which we didn't want). Luckily they changed it to the sushi promptly. </div>

<span style="text-align: center;">Between two people, we definitely over ordered. But that doesn't matter because we both really enjoyed the food (despite that struggle to finish it towards the end).</span><span style="text-align: center;"> The service was attentive and food came out at a reasonable pace. Although the price of the dishes are slightly steep, the fresh quality of the fish really shows. The unagi don that we initially wanted to try had sold out, but I can already foresee a next visit :D</span></div>

When I was younger, Toorak Village used to be my go-to place for an after school treat. The best thing there during my time was probably sushi. There weren't any decent cafes around there, hence no reason for me to return back to this area..But finally, one has appeared!! I took (aka thirdwheeled) my sister and her boyfriend here for our last brunch together before they move interstate. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Both my sister and I ordered the <b>green eggs and ham.</b> I was initially going to get the breakfast burger but decided against it. Thankfully, I turned against my first choice because this was absolutely delicious! Fluffy eggs with just slightest hints of pesto and that lovely vibrant green color definitely left an impression. The large ham hock pieces also had a slightly smoky flavour that matched nicely with sweet/sour pickled onion. The photo does no justice to the meal, but the eggs were sitting of the thickest piece of bread and by the end of the dish, I was stuffed. No food envy from me for once. </div>

<br />
There's only a handful of restaurants that I would try over and over again on Lygon St (most of them feel like a tourist trap!!). Whenever I feel like a quick plate of pasta that's actually decent, Carlton Expresso is my go-to place.<br />
<br />
My utmost favourite dish that I order most of the time would be the Pappardelle with porcini mushrooms and truffle oil. A simple pasta that isn't overly flavoursome but goes very well together. The piece of baguette also serves as a perfect companion to mop up the excess sauce! Although, compared to most pasta places, I find that they do cook their pasta until it is al-dente or slightly undercooked (which you may or may not like).<br />

I think i'll continue to return to Carlton Expresso. Their pasta is consistently good! </div>

Ever since I started working full time during the summer holidays, I've been trying few more places around the CBD for lunch. Whenever the weather is overly warm or I'm feeling a guilt free meal, Famish'd is the answer! Pre made salads, D.I.Y salads or a (sweet) potato spud with five choices, there's so many options to chose from. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I normally go for a mix of the pre made salads<span style="font-size: xx-small;"> (because I can never make up my mind and there's a lot of pressure when the long line of office people builds up behind me)</span> which come with seeded or sourdough bread for $11. Not being one to eat salad frequently or foods like cous cous and chickpeas, I find that each combination of salad is fresh, innovative and really work well together. The servings here are massive and believe me, there has never been one time where I've finished it all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Eating out almost everyday, I find it difficult to fit in more vegetables and fruits into my diet. But with Famish'd, it feels like I've reached that daily quota easily! </div>

I shared the above combination with two other friends which was more then enough to go around. The W<b>atermelon</b> sorbet was very light and refreshing. The other two flavours were more creamy. The S<b>alted Caramel</b> tasted similarly to these Werther's Original lollies I used to eat like crazy when I was a kid. My personal favourite, however, is <b>Croccante</b> which I purposely came back to eat again. It is fior di latte, a type of mozzarella (!!) which tastes nothing like cheese, but instead, vanilla, with surprise pieces of nut praline. </div>

It seems like Melbourne's summer has arrived after these last few days and it would be a shame not to come here and cool down with one or two ice creams...! </div>

<br />
Prospect Expresso is a local cafe that lies away from the hustle and bustle of Burke road. Wanting to visit this place for many weeks now, I finally found time one Sunday morning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMF7xIxZaSlxz16vf3MlP-4hE30ibxOItJQ7rB9HjQHzDuSeHz9eVasQL4-njLygUzwfOUxnpOu1ThujrwTNte09-FR_9w_cZnM1R6eenPjcHRaOxL1AEkGP9CECKRmB_DeSB_z424b9Kc/s1600/20131215_091856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMF7xIxZaSlxz16vf3MlP-4hE30ibxOItJQ7rB9HjQHzDuSeHz9eVasQL4-njLygUzwfOUxnpOu1ThujrwTNte09-FR_9w_cZnM1R6eenPjcHRaOxL1AEkGP9CECKRmB_DeSB_z424b9Kc/s640/20131215_091856.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
R had <b>"The Prospector" ($21) </b>, Prospect Expresso's own version of a big breakfast with poached eggs, mushrooms, avocado, bacon and tomato. Yessss, it tasted as good as it looked! He didn't complain about the dish at all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizBO6ra-yGipA-43zRgiV98r1dENy4CgJrj1U4ZgetCWQTrFBS994TVU1LJxT-FjbAlYvLwBvIY-uI-NvYrzdsXX6vRnPnrF34Cz1K29x6pfHMpJrTI0Jx_P3lfPINXUQHSdlKFDvRTrOt/s1600/20131215_092143.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizBO6ra-yGipA-43zRgiV98r1dENy4CgJrj1U4ZgetCWQTrFBS994TVU1LJxT-FjbAlYvLwBvIY-uI-NvYrzdsXX6vRnPnrF34Cz1K29x6pfHMpJrTI0Jx_P3lfPINXUQHSdlKFDvRTrOt/s640/20131215_092143.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the other hand, I had no food envy as I had the prettiest breakfast ever!! The <b>buttermilk panacotta</b> ($12.5) was exactly what I was looking for on a sunny day -a very light dish (and not too filling). The mango mousse was slightly airy which went well with the passionfruit pulp. I liked that the strawberries and raspberries contrasted well against the panacotta too. Although it was an aesthetically pleasing dish, I did end out picking off the green shreds and flowers which gave it a slightly grassy taste. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since trying this dish, it has definitely sparked my "slight" obsession for breakfast panacottas now. A worthwhile visit especially if you're visiting to Camberwell market on a Sunday. This cafe is right around the corner and a great option if you don't feel like a jam doughnut or snags for breakfast! </div>

<br />
After coming back from Singapore I had a lovely catch up with C who I hadn't seen in weeks!! We initially decided to go to somewhere in Smith St but I'm glad I changed my mind and decided to go to this hidden gem off Victoria St instead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>Thai milk tea </b>is a must at most thai restuarants. Jinda's version was pleasantly sweet and helped me wash down the spiciness of the other dishes. </div>

<b>Large Pork boat noodles with rice vermicelli </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We also ordered a large sized signature <b>Thai Boat noodles </b>which comes with option of pork or beef with a range of different noodles. This was actually the first time I've tried this thai dish. It had a very thin but robust beef flavoured soup which went really nicely with the pork and deep fried pork crackling! The crackling was light and airy as well. I changed the taste of the noodles by adding chilli flakes which was actually a lot more spicier than I anticipated, but the taste was a lot more addictive and tastier. There are also other condiments avaliable like a mix of garlic chilli oil, some kind of vinegar and sugar to adjust the taste to your liking. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This <b>Red duck curry </b>was really enjoyable!! It was rich and the servings of duck was so generous. I loved that the other ingredients inside the curry included pumpkin which actually goes so well together, lychees, carrots and eggplants. I couldn't help but keep pouring the curry sauce over the coconut rice.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The curry doesn't come with rice so we ordered the <b>Coconut rice. </b>Very fragrant! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjldUJKfTx2MugGwhtBTd1YHUVzY0uUt0LMqIhT9eYKrWqDr09_EE7GwLAxmv-WV1v5SDlInMlIBT84Z-NQXrEUge89uWmrzX0GKoXumep9Vwk9n0JGSjaF6PZtXYdJFWuvYLD78bWCZrka/s1600/20140111_150348.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjldUJKfTx2MugGwhtBTd1YHUVzY0uUt0LMqIhT9eYKrWqDr09_EE7GwLAxmv-WV1v5SDlInMlIBT84Z-NQXrEUge89uWmrzX0GKoXumep9Vwk9n0JGSjaF6PZtXYdJFWuvYLD78bWCZrka/s1600/20140111_150348.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
By this point, we were both very full. But I couldn't leave Jinda thai and NOT try their crepe cakes especially after seeing it all over Instagram. The <b>Thai milk tea crepe cake </b>came with two scoops of coconut icecream with coconut pieces in it too! The top of the cake is a panacotta like consistency which is very flavoursome, whilst the rest of the cake is thai milk tea flavoured crepes with cream in between. Although the cake was nice tasting, I personally found that the crepes was slightly too thick. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We both loved the food here, and needless to say we will be back! There are so many more dishes I want to try as their menu is so broad. I have previously tried this place for dinner and I do recommend to book!! It took me three different nights until I could get a booking, so do plan in advanced. It does get slightly noisy at night, but during lunch time periods it is not as busy and more of a quiet environment for casual catch ups with delicious tasting food at great prices. </div>

A new waffle store has opened up in the heart of Melbourne CBD. They have a few different flavours such as white chocolate or milk chocolate topping and a unique raspberry and white chocolate one too. My favourite one from here has got to be the chocolate stick waffle $3.60. Chocolate stick enclosed in the waffle that melts as you eat it! It also has a slightly caramalized texture which is nice and leaves a toffee like after taste feeling. Most of their items vary between 3-4 dollars, so there's nothing stopping me from visiting here for a cheap and quick treat or breakfast! </div>

I'll be honest, this is the second time I've ever had a souvlaki. My understanding is that they're heavy wraps stuffed with excessive amounts of meat and lots of sauce. But trust me, Jimmy Grant's changed all of it!<br />

<b>Nonna maria (chicken) $7.5 & mr papadopoulos $8. </b>Each of them are fitted into a thicker pita (?) type bread and filled with <b>mustard aioli, chips, onion, parsley</b>. Nonna maria was an obvious choice for me as I don't eat lamb and believe me it was truly wonderful. The chicken was extremely tender and fell apart oh so easily. Although it is slightly drier then the conventional souvos, I personally prefer it this way as it doesn't leave that greasy feel. </div>

Needing something healthy to balance out our hearty meal, we needed some vegetables. The <b>Grain salad $8 </b>topped with greek yoghurt was another winner. The grains are slightly larger then ones that I have tried at other places and weren't crunchy which apart from the nuts, giving it a nice texture. Quite enjoyed eating this. </div>

I can't believe I didn't try Jimmy Grants sooner. If there's anything I love, it's when decent quality food is priced very well. We all left feeling satisfied with a full belly and slightly regretful that we didn't have enough room to try the greek doughnuts!! I'm not too worried as there will definitely be a next time.<br />

<br />
Having been here numerous times in the last few months, I think it's time to share my favourite local late night dessert place with everyone. Ayomo, situated in the heart of Clarendon St specialises in frozen yoghurt, smoothies, cold pressed juices and <b><u>freshly made (!!) </u></b>waffles. They have unique froyo flavours which change frequently such as macadamia, mango and passionfruit, watermelon and many more. I personally like the macadamia one as it is super unique and the nut flavour is subtle.<br />
<br />
I'm in love with their Belgian waffles which are crispy on the outside, served with bananas and strawberries with your choice of froyo and sauce. Chocolate hazelnut is the way to go in my opinion! I always order this each time I visit, that way I get the best of both worlds (froyo AND waffle). What really sets Ayomo apart from many other cafes is that their waffles are made to order and not preheated in the toaster.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
Even if you're not feeling froyo, they also have a selection of pressed juices to chose from. Watermelon juice (when available) is something i opt for most times. They're also quite decently priced especially if you go when they have "248" deal going on.<br />

Don't forget to check out their Facebook page or Instagram to see when they have specials such as froyo-o clock or wear a certain colour to receive free toppings!! I'll admit I have a slight obsession with breakfast boards at the moment. Why pay for a sweet and savoury meal separately when you can get it all in one?! Rustica's version offers their onsite daily made sourdough with generous generous amounts of avocado and a poached egg. Their homemade granola isn't overly sweet either which paired nicely with the slightly sour yoghurt and poached fruit. Compared to many of the breakfast dishes I've been having recently, this one left me feeling a lot more healthier and full too! </div>

<b>Pork belly Ramen burger $15. </b>I definitely could not leave here without trying their RAMEN BURGER!! When it came out, I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't use my hands to pick it up and eat it (that's the proper/only way to eat it right?!). I liked that the lightly pan-fried exterior gave the noodles a pleasant light "crunch" to it which came undone easily after bathing in the sauce. The plum sauce veered slightly on the sweet side and reminded me of tonkatsu sauce. I didn't quite enjoy it as much as I anticipated as the pork belly was too fatty and eventually it all tasted the same after a few bites. I will warn you that this is really filling! I could only finish one patty. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Shizuku has offers many unique dishes that you would never see in a typical Japanese restaurant. You won't find sushi here, instead ramen and donburi are the options to go for, along with some distinct entrees. Although I found the ramen burger to be slightly overrated, their starters and the ramen was definitely good enough to warrant another, or multiple future visits. Whether or not it offers Melbourne's best ramen, a return visit will be needed to decide the verdict! </div>

Two Lost Boys is one of Windsor's latest cafe additions conveniently situated next to Windsor station. I ordered the baked beans and was happily surprised to see that the beans were tomato based with a slightly crunchy herbed topping that reminded me of pizza spices. Unlike most places which over bake their eggs, I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that I could dip my bread into the runny eggs here. So happy :)<br />
We left the cafe feeling full enough to fit in lunch later. The food and service here is quite fast so it's a perfect pit stop to grab some breakfast and coffee before you head off to your next destination.SuetSuethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08430776391240719658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2713621705196790458.post-82111566718928861602013-10-13T02:50:00.003-07:002013-10-13T21:13:04.265-07:00Peko peko Peko Peko<br />

I'm not going to lie but Peko Peko has a special place in my heart. During highschool, my friends and I would always come to this Taiwanese cafe to eat. There are so many different bento boxes to choose from so you'll definitely find one or a few to your liking. Even if you're not a fan of them, any of the bento options can be turned into main meals too. There are other options too like Taiwanese beef soup noodles, fried noodles and many small entrees. My personal favourite is the pop chicken bento box with fried rice upgrade (+3.50) with kewpie mayo. Battered bite-sized chicken always go hand in hand with Japanese mayo, don't you think ? The formosa island noodles are quite different too. The soup is thick and slightly peppery and starchy (reminds me a bit of Chinese sweet and sour soup texture!), but is filled with yummy bamboo, carrot, wombok, mini pork balls and black funghi/mushroom. It's a warming dish for a cold, windy Melbourne day.<br />
<br />
Their prices are quite reasonable with most dishes around $11-$13 dollar mark which is great as the food is filling and so tasty. There's also not many decent places to eat nearby, so this hidden gem is very popular especially with the office people around the vicinity. Bookings are a <b>must,</b> unless you want to wait at least twenty minutes. They also do takeaway too.SuetSuethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08430776391240719658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2713621705196790458.post-66807577547778256942013-10-04T07:10:00.000-07:002013-10-04T07:10:24.188-07:00Bistro ThierryBistro Thierry<br />

There's so many reasons why I love going back to Bistro Thierry. The restaurant, situated in Hawksburn village, reminds me of many bistros in Paris I visited with the white linen cloths, laid back atmosphere and French waiters. They have a decently priced lunch menu (2 course for $35 and any extra course for $8) which comes with a glass of wine. Considering the quality of the food produced, it is really great value. Most dishes here are quite comforting and heart warming, you will definitely leave feeling satisfied and content. Each time I return, I can never find a fault in the food. I would also highly recommend trying their desserts, I can never go past their Tarte tartin!</div>

The food here is standard brunch fare that many places Melbourne already offer and there aren't any stand out dishes. I didn't warm up to the big breakfast as the scrambled egg was overcooked, the kale (which has many health benefits) was boiled, bland and didn't mesh well with the whole dish. That being said, the location definitely makes up for the quality of the food. Carousel Cafe has one of Melbourne's best cafe views in my opinion. What's more relaxing then sitting in the sun with a light breeze whilst facing a city skyline? On Saturdays, I believe there is a free 5km timed run around the park (also known as <a href="http://www.parkrun.com.au/albert-melbourne/">parkrun</a>), so it's a great opportunity to grab coffee or breakfast then too!SuetSuethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08430776391240719658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2713621705196790458.post-63898494289016033402013-09-29T08:33:00.000-07:002013-09-30T18:13:27.407-07:00Olinda Tea house<br />

Over the weekend, I went on a mini road trip with the girls to Tesselaar Tulip Festival! It is situated in Silvan which was about a one hr drive from the city. It would've been shorter but my GPS decided to take us down a very steep (32% incline!!) and narrow road which we subsequently ended up getting lost for some period. However, the drive was definitely worth it. The tulip fields are in full bloom and look amazingly beautiful together. Perfect for those photo opportunities too, I think I ended up being at least one hundred photos up after this....! You can also pick fresh tulips or buy potted tulips to keep at home.<br />

<br />
The festival is ending on October 4th 2013. I believe it is only on once a year, so if you have time (and weather permits!) head down and enjoy the day out of the city. I would recommend that you don't wear nice shoes because it can get muddy (I learnt the hard way....). Also, do not rely on your phone for GPS because the reception there is quite patchy!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
After driving that far, there's no way we couldn't leave without some afternoon tea. With some extremely poor internet reception, we found our next destination: Olinda Tea house. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can never go past scones. These were warm, soft and married well with double cream and jam. The devonshire tea is actually $15, but for a little extra you can upgrade the tea/coffee to a chai latte. The chai latte is extremely filling! I found the flavour to be very subtle and not spicy at all. You can also adjust the taste to your liking by adding ginger or cinnamon. </div>

Olinda teahouse was definitely a pleasant ending to our road trip. The place is very comfortable to sit in with floor to ceiling windows so you can admire the view. We came around three o' clock on a Saturday afternoon and found seats immediately. They also have breakfast and lunch options too if you're not feeling something sweet. It was a very peaceful place and a nice opportunity to catch up with the girls. </div>

My sister who is extremely picky with food and places she eats at actually commented that this place "wasn't bad". It's very rare that she'll comment positively about Asian casual dining that I had to come here asap and try for myself!<br />
<br />
Shophouse kitchen is a Hongkong cafe (also known as "cha chan tan") with taiwanese influence. They have an extensive and nicely designed menu (probably the largest I've seen!) ranging from typical HK food such as baked rice, all kinds of fried/soup noodles, roast meats to dumplings. I actually had such a hard time deciding that I just over ordered ... like always :P<br />

<b>Fried Chicken wings ~$6 . </b>These were quite alright, they weren't overly oily but still had a nice crunchy texture. It wasn't outstanding so I would probably order the other fried foods next time. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Baked rice with chicken chop with curry sauce $11.50.</b> This is one of their signature dishes and I can see why they would recommend it too. There's a choice of white, tomato or curry sauce. The sauce here is very typical of Hong kong cafes and is thinner and more flavoursome/spicier then Japanese curry. My favourite part was mixing the sauce with fried rice together, perfect comfort food. Most places only have white rice underneath (soooo boring !) , so the fried rice was a bonus touch. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Sauteed bok choy with garlic $9. </b> I always have a habit of ordering a vegetable dish to balance out the meal. One comment: This has got to be the <u>ugliest</u> cut vegetables that I have ever seen. Apart from that, it had a very subtle garlic taste and surprisingly wasn't starchy either. </div>
<br />
For a quick, reasonably priced Chinese meal in a clean environment, I would head to Shophouse kitchen again. They have so much more on the menu that I want to try!<br />

<b>Everyday hero combination which includes half a sub, chips and drink $11.90. </b>I chose <b>#Throwback (veal, pork, orange &fennel meatballs simmered in nona's homemade sauce with baby spinach & shaved grana padano). </b>I was so happy with my choice, the meatballs were super tasty and that sauce is seriously so flavoursome!! If you're feeling like chips, their <b>secret spice </b>is worth trying, it's quite addictive. I think this meal is pretty decent value as you get a side and drink as well. Even in Chinatown, you can't get something that's this health (all the baguettes are handmade), filling and with a drink for this price! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I was surprised that Hero was not busy when I popped in (and secretly glad too so that I didn't have to wait long at all!). The food came out so quickly that we both demolished our subs within 20 minutes. I was really impressed with their sandwich combinations and their quality too. They also have a separate pop up section to eat in so there's plenty of room to accommodate for bigger groups if you want to eat in. My only regret is not ordering two half subs because I really wanted to try the other flavours! I'm insanely jealous of all the RMIT people who have this very cool cafe near them.. So come quick and try their subs before everyone starts to find out about them!!<br />

<br />
One of my favourite dishes would have to be Korean fried chicken. But sadly, for many of my health conscious friends it isn't , so I barely eat it. On this occasion after I finished work late, I dragged my dad to eat supper with me which happened to be here. Gami has been opened for several years and is quite popular that there are two more stores in the CBD (King st & Healeys lane). I've previously wanted to try this joint out but the lines are so long sometimes!<br />

<b>Fried rice cake with sweet chilli sauce $5. </b>I really wanted to order the Tteok Bok ki but it would be too much for two people to finish. This dish didn't disappoint - the rice cake had a nice crispy outer edge and the sauce was really addictive too! I had to force myself to stop eating it otherwise I wouldn't fit in the KFC.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Half/half chicken with spicy sauce and original $32. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The chicken also comes out with perfect accompaniments: pickled radish and coleslaw. It unfortunately was not that nice as I had thought it would be. The original flavour was quite dry. As for the spicy, it was fared slightly better. The spicy sauce kept the chicken more moist and i really felt the heat after a few pieces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Overall, Gami didn't fully live up to the hype I was expecting. It wasn't bad, just not the best KFC I've had. If I do return, I'd definitely order the boneless chicken (so difficult to differentiate which piece is what part of the chicken once it's been flavoured!) and avoid choosing the original flavour.SuetSuethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08430776391240719658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2713621705196790458.post-83015698923499001162013-09-04T23:00:00.001-07:002013-09-05T00:10:48.637-07:00JoomakJoomak<br />

Hidden right next door to Red Love/Biba hair and down a set of stairs lies Joomak, a late night Korean bar/restaurant. I remember the the first time I went it took me 20 minutes to find the entrance but it was so worth it! There are so many different reasons why I love going here, whether it's for the mango rice wine or yummy korean food. This time I went was after a few drinks on a Friday night when their kitchen closes at 3 am (this may be possible post-clubbing food option apart from Maccas, Chillipadi and Minh Xiong prehaps?)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I definitely recommend everyone who likes Korean food to come to this hidden gem. The whole vibe is quite enjoyable, they play up to date korean music and the dim lights make it perfect for the late night chats or just if you're just feeling supper. Their drinks are addictive and don't even taste like alcohol at all (if you count out soju!). </div>

Over the last two or so years, Big Mama is one of my go-to places when I'm in need of a quick, cheap feed during exam periods. Their menu is a mix of Korean and Japanese food with pretty much any item you can think of available. The quality of food is also reasonable for the price and satisfying but sometimes may be inconsistent. If there's any dish I order each time I go, it'll be <b>Agedashi tofu</b>, you'll definitely see this on every table!!<br />

The stables of Como is a really lovely cafe. My sister and I instantly loved the interior and the location (situated inside Como Gardens). I believe this restaurant is also run by the same group who brought you Mr Porgie & jones/Snow Pony/Friends of mine and they have used a similar menu here too. Although some people may think the menu gets a bit repetitive, but personally if it's solid and delicious, just stick with it! The food here is pleasant and does not fault at all. I also couldn't leave without trying their sweets (they have an insane (!!) sweets table too). Scones are one of my favourite tea items and they didn't disappoint at all. Fluffy, warm and they don't crumble either, delicious with lots of cream and jam :) </div>
